ABSTRACT

Flexible Commitment can be a crossroads of sorts where the choice is between "trusting the art" and becoming blocked. To understand Flexible Commitment further, it might be helpful to imagine an artist at her easel. In the stories and case studies that follow, the chapter explores the fourth stage of the creative process, Flexible Commitment. An artist engaged in painting will inevitably experience rough patches where her creation doesn't proceed as planned. Therapists will likely encounter times of client resistance or inadvertently fail to empathize with her client. Here, the artist has come to the stage of Flexible Commitment, another place where creative possibilities flood in. It is the place of improvisation. She has to let go of the exact outcome and give up how it "should" be done. Brandy was able to follow her creative process and find more resolution with her expression of pain.
