ABSTRACT
On 7 March 1939 Dorothea Richards suffered a miscarriage in the last months of pregnancy. She circled the date in her calendar diary and copied a poem by Ch'ii Yiian: "Sad oh saddest I Of all seasons brings I Cold autumn breath ... Behold, a traveller on distant ways /Trudges, frail and foreboding."
