ABSTRACT

The midday or lunchtime traffic is regarded as a most severe test of the capability of a lift system to handle passenger demands. It is a traffic condition that makes use of all of a lift system's capability. This period of time can last over two hours, depending on the business arrangements in a building. The character of the traffic changes throughout the midday period. The most severe demand of the whole midday period is the central portion, and the lifts can load to their full capacity. In uppeak traffic, there is a benchmark of a pure up demand; in down peak, there is a benchmark of a pure down demand; and in interfloor traffic, there is a benchmark of a completely random demand. The chapter also establishes a formula for the calculation of the round trip time during the midday period with a number of assumptions.
