ABSTRACT

In this final chapter I will discuss how some of the topics dealt with throughout the book can be taken one step further, asking what you can get out of the study of language and how the study of language can help your personal (and not just professional) development. You may wonder what exactly is meant by personal development. Indeed, it is not totally separable from the other skills discussed. Yet, studying language will give you insights that will be useful, challenging or interesting in your personal life. In this chapter, I will look at how you will be equipped to:

Reflect on your own and on others’ language use

Evaluate common attitudes to language, and challenge those attitudes where appropriate

Improve your writing, spelling, and general understanding of language, knowing what is important in which settings

Being able to reflect on English in relation to other languages of the world

Being able to approach new tasks, such as learning a language.
