ABSTRACT
This chapter explores various comedy strategies incorporated in TV shows that present characters who are viewed as Other, who belong to America’s racial and ethnic subcultures. It assesses the different racial/ethnic discourses that the sitcom has engaged. The chapter provides a brief historical overview of race in the sitcom. Sitcom roles can be identified that were cast with what appears to be little concern for the actors’ race or ethnicity. Comedy can satirize the powers-that-be and challenge the status quo. However, during the network era of radio and television, comedy more often than not contributed to the suppression of groups of Americans who were not white, English-speaking Protestants of northern-European descent. To comprehend how race, ethnicity, national origin, and religion work within a specific sitcom, it is helpful to examine a single show that foregrounds characters of a subculture. Early work on race in the cinema and television concentrated on identifying pernicious stereotypes and rooting them out.
