ABSTRACT

Remote Device Management (RDM) uses the same physical layer, or hardware, as DMX, including the cables, connectors, data splitters, fixtures, and controllers. RDM commands are sent on the same pair of wires as DMX, although they cannot be sent at the same time. After the discovery process is complete a RDM controller can send messages to and receive messages from an individual responder. In order for a controller to communicate with RDM responders it must first know which RDM devices are connected to the link and what their hardware address is. A RDM message can be either a Get command or a Set command; a Get command is a request for information from a responder about a parameter and a Set command is used to change the setting of a parameter on a device. The lighting console may or may not be the most practical way to use RDM, depending on the circumstances.
