ABSTRACT

Television is a time-based visual and aural medium. Creators of television, whether working on sport or crime dramas, The Great British Bake-Off or a sofa show, are dealing with three basic aspects: a developing narrative structure as the programme moves through time, a rich and informative sound track which will enhance the narrative and create its own particular qualities, and a pleasurable or striking visual impression. Directors are concerned with all three as they focus on creating a programme that will appeal to their audience. We will be discussing narrative in Chapter 15 and sound in Chapters 11 and 14. In this chapter and the next we will focus on the visual aspects from the point of view of the director and the cinematographer.
