ABSTRACT

Editing is television’s great invisible process. Whether it is carried out in high-tech facilities attached to a major broadcaster or on a personal computer at home, the task is to create a coherent whole from the flow of images and sound captured at the production stage. The editorial team, working with the director and producer, or, for some productions, an ‘edit producer’ (or ‘preditor’), must now give the final shape to a programme. The intensity of the process can give rise to creative tension, inspiring those involved, or to ferocious differences of opinion. Nevertheless, together the team must ensure that the result will inform, amuse, intrigue or enthral its audience.
