ABSTRACT

Jeff Howe and Mark Robinson coined the term "crowdsourcing" in 2005; the reality is they just gave a name to what they saw occurring online, particularly as it related to laborers securing work through the use of an open call. But the basic tenets and strategies that govern a successful crowdsourcing campaign have been known to, and executed by, humanoids for eons. Crowdsourced venture comes from Leonhard Euler and Tobias Mayer, who both received cash awards for their work on Mayer's lunar distance tables. When their prizes are announced, Euler and Mayer both go public to make it extremely clear that they weren't motivated or moved by the potential of receiving money for their efforts. Ultimately, tens of thousands of people are sourced. Knowing that they are making a contribution and playing a part in something revolutionary. The crowd works together to collate the definitions and origins of every word in the English language.
