ABSTRACT

Mental health is a time bomb that is ticking and without the right action now millions of our children growing up will feel the effect. The Mental Health suggests that 20 per cent of children have a mental health problem in any given year, and about 10 per cent at any one time. For children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), the prevalence of mental health problems rises to nine in ten. Among children with PMLD, Rose and colleagues (2009) note that often mental health difficulties are overlooked or changes in their behaviour are misinterpreted. It appears from research literature and the CLDD Project evidence that mental health problems may be the most pervasive and co-occurring need to compound and complicate the special educational needs and disabilities of children with CLDD. The CLDD Project developed the briefing packs on mental health and attachment and the SSAT's mental health Complex Needs series booklet to support schools.
