ABSTRACT

Part IV of Acting for Real revolves around drama therapy in fostering well-being outside of clinical arenas. Chapter 12 describes the use of dramatic methods and mindsets in raising children—as a way of addressing some of the inevitable challenges in parenting and family life, as well as of amplifying rewarding moments. The author brings in examples from her own family and from her work with children to illustrate how beneficial playful, dramatic engagement between children and the adults who care for them can be, starting in babyhood and extending through adolescence. The chapter includes descriptions of specific simple games, methods and techniques that cultivate emotional intelligence, social skills, and resilience; address fears, anxieties, and conflicts; and help children prepare for real-life events.
