ABSTRACT

Part II of Acting for Real provides a compilation of over a hundred drama therapy techniques and processes. The techniques are categorized by phases within the session and treatment series, and subcategorized by therapeutic objective. Many of the techniques are devised by the author, and others are adapted (some from Viola Spolin’s improvisational theatre exercises).

Chapter 6 focuses on techniques that are especially useful at the beginning of sessions and in early stages of a treatment series. The techniques are further organized in accordance with five central goals of facilitating: (1) emotional expression; (2) group interaction; (3) physical activation; (4) trust; and (5) observation and concentration. The descriptions of techniques are integrated with clinical applications, caveats, variations, segues to related techniques, and examples.
