Women like Frau Hauffe and Helene Smith and Miss Beauchamp have assured for themselves a kind of immortality, rather like those worthy folk whose miraculous cures brought fame and prosperity to the wonderworking spot. The psyche of the modern European has not forgotten the lesson of the last war, however much it has been banished from his consciousness. Women are increasingly aware that love alone can give them full stature, just as men are beginning to divine that only the spirit can give life its highest meaning. Both seek a psychic relationship, because love needs the spirit, and the spirit love, for its completion. The European psyche has been torn to shreds by the hellish barbarism of the war. Relationship is possible only if there is a psychic distance between people, in the same way that morality presupposes freedom. Children are one of the main reasons for maintaining a responsible attitude towards marriage.
