ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the pledges made in three selected parties such as Popolo della Liberta (People of Freedom-PDL), the Lega Nord (Northern League-LN) and the Schweizerische Volkspartei (Swiss People's Party-SVP), manifestos concerning their key themes prior to entering government. It explains whether the extent to these pledges were subsequently fulfilled, in order to ascertain whether populists what they promised are delivered or not. Although the extent to the three parties were successful in government varied, people have not found any evidences that they were inevitably destined to fail nor they had to renounce their identity and key policy proposals. The chapter assesses PDL's performance in government by considering the extent to which it managed to deliver not only economic growth but also reduction in the public debt and the burden of taxation. It focuses on the European Union (EU), which is against the threat allegedly posed by country's independence that the SVP mainly sought to act during the 2003-2007 period.
