ABSTRACT

This chapter reflects on the different curriculums taught to Palestinian students. In East Jerusalem, the same curriculum is taught with different alterations and censorships. The curriculum also suffers from the conflict and separation between the different supervising bodies across the education sector in East Jerusalem. The Palestinian Ministry of Education also did not have the budget for the production of the books, depending on foreign aid. The process of producing and distributing the books was funded by funds from different countries like Italy, Denmark, Ireland and from the World Bank. Manchi, The Jerusalem Education Administration, has been trying to push the private schools it subsidises in East Jerusalem to teach the modified Palestinian curriculum. In Europe, the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research examines Palestinian textbooks on language, religious education, history and civics education and concluded that the overall orientation of the curriculum is peaceful, in spite of the harsh and violent realities in which Palestinian schools operate.
