ABSTRACT
This chapter highlights how rural parents shape the habitus of rural students by reasoning with the students and emphasizing role of the individual student. In rural China, parents stress the critical role, children play in their own education as well as how children themselves view their role in education. The chapter highlights the shift of responsibility of learning to the individual and importance of child's agency in their own learning reflecting the discourse on modernization and suzhi. This chapter articulates the ways that children want to study and how parents support their studies. It begins to delve into understanding how parents having high educational aspirations and placing responsibility on the children influence children's habitus for learning. Rural parents rest their assessment of a child's success on the teacher. In conjunction with parental emphasis on the responsibility of children for their own learning, parents were supporting their children and that teachers were also very important in their children's learning in schools.
