ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the essentials of reading-curriculum design and some sets of principles governing reading-curriculum design. The application of principles involves first of all deciding on the most important principles to apply and monitoring their application through the whole design process. The principles, when translated into practice, aim to help students improve their reading abilities and become self-motivated, independent, and strategic readers who can handle reading demands in future reading contexts. The several core reading-curriculum principles focus on the importance of amount, frequency, purposefulness, practice, discussion, and motivation. Language programs that draw upon the principles for their reading curricula can expect more effective approaches to reading instruction.
