ABSTRACT
Machiavelli concludes the chapter by turning back to what the prince can do to be held in esteem with regard to his own subjects. A prince should show himself to be a lover of the virtues by giving hospitality to virtuous men (especially those who are excellent in an art), should encourage his subjects to practice their trades, offer rewards for those who succeed in doing so, keep his people occupied with feast days and spectacles, and meet regularly with guilds and other associations.6 What is perhaps most remarkable about this advice is how brief it is. Subjects that other writers, for example in the mirror-of-princes genre, might linger over scarcely detain our author.
