ABSTRACT
The Arab is for ever quoting proverbs or sayings of some poet or other, and he seems to enjoy this almost as much as story telling. This applies to the town Arab much more than to the Badawin, and one cannot dine with a local merchant without being treated to a volley of proverbs, anecdotes and quotations. Except for the sayings of the Prophet, which are always quoted with reverence and with a definite moral intent, most proverbs are brought up in a spirit of jest to amuse and divert those who are listening.
