ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book reveal lessons learned in the cauldron of the Distributed Leadership (DL) Program, a longitudinal effort that systematically promoted leadership capacity in schools. The focus of improvement efforts in schools seeks ultimately to promote student learning and growth. From an investment standpoint, it is wise to support the variable in schools that offers the greatest likelihood of realizing schools' core mission: enhancement of teaching and learning. The DL Program focused on an approach to building leadership capacity in schools which relied on teacher development and leadership as the catalyst for change and improvement. In focusing on teachers, and grouping them in collaborative team arrangements with their school administrators, expertise and strategic planning were distributed, as were risk and sharing of responsibilities.
