ABSTRACT
While the multiple-choice question is not new, advances in educational technologies have significantly improved what can be included in a multiple-choice question and how and when an assessment is delivered. This is a big reason why we argued in Chapter 1 that MCQs are actually wonderfully flexible and can be rich learning experiences for your students, not simply dry, antiseptic measurement probes. Delivering MCQs online has advantages and drawbacks that range from offering adaptive learning approaches to concerns about authentication and cheating. The technology also opens up fabulous learning opportunities to deliver targeted, immediate feedback to students at relatively much less time, energy, and money. We will discuss the pros and cons of when and how to deliver MCQs through online assessment technologies in this chapter and the possibilities for feedback in a subsequent chapter.
