ABSTRACT

One of the most frequent criticisms of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) is that they frequently require only memorization and cannot get to higherorder thinking, critical thinking, or the higher taxonomic levels. There are plenty of things you can do in order to have your MCQs reach those skills. We’ll explore what you can do inside of the item itself, with add-ons, and with groupings of MCQs to get students to think during a test. We’ll also look at some administration choices, like group tests.
