ABSTRACT

Asset integrity in essence is the safety of all components in an installation that ensure process safety through focusing on potential hazards that may lead to major accidents such as fire, explosion, collision with vessels or structural failures affecting the installation as a whole and therefore causing catastrophic consequences. In comparison with occupational safety that encompasses personal safety, the scope of asset integrity is vast where the former may be incorporated within the latter. Two models i.e. the Swiss Cheese Model and the Bow-Tie Model can be used to monitor an asset's integrity throughout its lifecycle. However, the ageing plant caused concern which led to the introduction of the KP3 programme in 2004 where the concept of asset integrity was widened to include existing elements of KP1 as well as the physical condition of plant. The KP4 - Ageing and Life Extension Inspection Programme was introduced due to the fact that ageing of offshore installations is a major concern.
