ABSTRACT

In the UK in particular and across other areas of the world in general, the workforce in the offshore oil and gas industry trains to standards developed by the industry under the umbrella of Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Board (OPITO). All workers employed in the UKCS are required by the duty holder to complete some of these courses: Basic hydrogen sulfide Training, Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET), Further Offshore Emergency Training (FOET), Escape Chute Training (ECT), Helicopter Underwater Emergency Training (HUET) and Travel Safely by Boat. In addition, the course also covers induction to hazards in the workplace, HUET, use of TEMPSC as a passenger, escape from smoke, and basic fire fighting and emergency first aid are also covered to provide workers with a basic knowledge for ensuring safety and self-survival. Workers in the offshore oil and gas industry are required to be physically and mentally fit to travel offshore and undertake their jobs.
