ABSTRACT

Basic Offshore Safety Helicopter Safety and Escape Helicopters are considered workhorses of the offshore oil and gas industry because of their ability to transport personnel to and from the offshore installations, but accidents continue to happen despite efforts by operators and other industry stakeholders. Systems such as HUMS (Health and Usage Monitoring System), Advanced Anomaly Detection (AAD) for HUMS, Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), Helicopter Operations Monitoring Programme (HOMP) are some examples of the systems that have been utilised to improve the safety of helicopters. In the UK, in order to fly commercial aircraft as public transport, the operator or pilot must be issued with an Air Operator's Certificate. Due to the nature of operations, helicopters require a high degree of maintenance to ensure the safety of operations and airworthiness of the craft. This type of maintenance is required to prevent or reduce the probability of failure after a predetermined period of time such as that recommended by the manufacturer.
