The common image of ‘hunter-gatherers’, or ‘foragers’ as they are increasingly known, is of a small group wandering around the landscape in a nomadic fashion seeking food or following animals. This chapter begins by considering the relation - ship between people and the environment and then considers the techniques archaeologists use to interpret the function and status of sites and structures. It builds on Chapters 1 and 2 and should be read in conjunction with Chapter 5, which introduces underpinning ideas about interpreting sites and their formation.
