ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the acquisition of mater - ials, production of goods and artefacts and exchange. Many of the methods used in studying materials were covered in Chapter 3, with inter - pretative techniques in Chapter 5. This chapter builds on them, providing context and key studies. It also relates to the economic functions of settlements (Chapter 7) and the relationship between economy and society (Chapter 10). Key concepts covered include:

n Extraction: the technologies used to acquire resources, particularly through mining. The acqui sition of organic resources from plants and animals was largely covered in Chapter 8.
