ABSTRACT

Section A of this chapter outlines the key concepts and terms from sociology and anthropology that archaeologists use to help define and explain past beliefs and rituals. It also discusses the techniques and sources archaeologists use to interpret evidence of religious belief and ritual practices. Section B looks at continuity and change in religion and ritual over time, using the later pre - history of north-west Europe for most examples. Section C focuses upon Ancient Egypt to examine the particular phenomenon of state religion.
