ABSTRACT

This chapter covers several linked topics. The first half covers the key threats to our archaeological heritage and considers the nature and effective - ness of current protection for archaeological remains. This is largely from an English or UK perspective as appropriate but with examples drawn from elsewhere to illustrate other dimen - sions. The second half outlines the roles of the key agencies involved in archaeology and managing heritage and the key debates about the preserva - tion and ownership of archaeological remains. It should be read in conjunction with Chapters 2 and 13.
