ABSTRACT

Wandering Rocks, Physics, The Egoist, and The Little Review: The bases of our physics seemed to have been put in permanently and for all time. The hour accordingly has struck when our conceptions of physics must necessarily be overhauled. The entire question of knowledge, truth, and reality must come up for reassessment. Dora Marsden, Philosophy: The Science of Signs XV -Two Rival Formulas, The Egoist. The Wandering Rocks episode of Ulysses marks a departure on several fronts: it is the first chapter to vary from the novel's initial style by narrating the consciousness of minor characters; it is the only chapter not based on the Homeric paradigm; and it uses an Einsteinian model to embody multiply-narrated events, leveling perspectival privilege in a politically radical vision of colonial Dublin. The Einsteinian connection is all the more tantalizing because little is known about the episode's origin.
