ABSTRACT
Nineteenth-century European and American travellers left detailed accounts of power relations, territorial landscapes, ideologies, customs, recovered poetry and oral traditions. A survey of these accounts shows that during the nineteenth century, this tribal landscape was far from static or even stable. e wanderings of the great tribes took place mostly before the eighteenth century, often as a result of international political turmoil, but the dynamics of tribal interaction continued to change the landscape.
