ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the nature of the distinction between erotic art and pornography. The terms "erotic art" and "pornography" do not have precise definitions so we will need to do some linguistic tidying up before people can answer the question. The more usual case is of a work of art that depicts a state of affairs that people find morally problematic. One option would be to claim that there are two different judgements to be made: an aesthetic judgement and a moral judgement. The first judgement is whether or not The Birth of a Nation works as a film. The second judgement is whether or not The Birth of a Nation is or is not immoral. There are no unicorns does not prevent from producing paintings of unicorns. The erotic is probably not a realm that can bear too much moral transparency.
