ABSTRACT

Being and Time was Heidegger's first major publication. Heidegger's approach to philosophical interpretation is based on his premise that philosophize are attempting to reach a clearer understanding of something that is already vaguely familiar to us. In using Dasein, he awakens our awareness and inspires us to look at ourselves with fresh eyes. Western philosophers, such as Descartes, have traditionally tried to observe 'objectively' and understand humanity by 'lifting' people out of their world in order to isolate an independent 'essence' or 'pure awareness'. Collection of instruments and materials related to a ready-to-hand item Heidegger calls 'equipment totality'. Heidegger also pays close attention to the role that space, time and distance play with regard to our experience of the practical significance of the entities around us. The 'They-self' is Heidegger's term for the inauthentic mode of the self. Heidegger never clearly elaborates this concept and invariably he presents Dasein's average everydayness as a mode of inauthentic existence.
