ABSTRACT

Writing for production is about anticipating problems and solving them in script, and taking that script into production sometimes requires adjustments and even more problem solving. Filmmakers may have doubts—that is only natural—but until they have a story they love and a script they can make ready for production, they are nowhere. This chapter provides motivation analysis exercise for the filmmakers that help them determine their motivation and whether it is strong enough to help them survive the writing and production process. When they write with production in mind, they need to be able to create doable scenarios that they can visualize working. And they need to have the confidence to know that they can get them to work in spite of messy circumstances and problems that might come up. Better to know that before they start than at the end of a long and painful process that might devastate them, their finances, and their family.
