ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is pitched at an appropriate academic and practical level to enable people to evolve from initial helper communication skills that their use in everyday life. There are many different professional helper roles within society. The book use the term 'those working with the welfare of others' in the preface to acknowledge that a helper is anyone whose professional interest is in the well-being, happiness, health and prosperity of another. It introduces come of the leading experts in the counselling field, and explore how their ideas and models have influenced teaching over a number of years, and influenced the development of new and innovative counselling skills model, the relational skills model (RSM). The book helps people to embed and enhance counselling and communication skills through mirroring the counselling skills training experience in the classroom.
