ABSTRACT

Upon settling in the Ottoman Empire, the Jews are subjected to a number of regulations which forbid them to retaliate against abuse by Turks. They do their best to obey these rules but, when a Turk throws a dead cat at a passing Jew, the latter is unable to control his rage and beats up the culprit. Although the anger bargain between master and worker and the accumulation of tricks which finally lead to the loss of temper are not displayed in the tale in the usual fashion, they are still present in it. The agreement, however, is between the Turks and the Jews, with the stakes involving the entire Jewish community. Joseph becomes so fed up with his wife Pulachi that he plans to kill her by inviting her to stretch out on a blanket which he has placed over the opening of a deep well.
