ABSTRACT

The introduction and increasing implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology in the industry in recent years has significantly redefined design and construction team interactions and refocused the collaborative processes involved. Clients recognise the value of design integration and collaborative working and are increasingly insisting that their design-construct team have efficient collaboration amongst the different members. The IT tools, the technical aspects supporting BIM system, are essential to the processes of design, construction team collaboration and management. The use of these tools varies significantly, ranging from basic 2D CAD drawings to advanced 3D and BIM models. The British standard established the methodology for managing the production, distribution and quality of construction information, including that generated by CAD systems, using a disciplined process for collaboration. Common Data Environments (CDEs) are partly a remedy to the issues associated with the traditional information flow, and partly add efficiency to the management of those flows.
