ABSTRACT

A key driver for the UK Government's Building Information Modelling (BIM) strategy has been its intention to shape and create an efficient, fit-for-purpose and sustainable estate of public buildings and facilities. Embedding the building user perspective into the post-handover phase is a tried-and-tested facet of post-occupancy evaluation (POE) as a technique to gather reliable and useful data about building performance in use. If a soft landings philosophy is applied as a mandatory project outcome, a POE marks a milestone in the process of user input from early design stages forward. A wide range of software applications is commercially available for the management of digital data during the occupation phase of a building's whole life use. If the BSRIA five-stage protocol has been embedded in the BIM process during design-construct phases, the final stage flags up a number of key points which need to be embedded in maintenance plans and information strategies for implementation.
