ABSTRACT

The construction industry is accepted as being fragmented bidding for individual projects and occupying a niche which can be guarded and cherished, making the whole process quite conservative and reluctant to change. A complementary publication, BIM Handbook: A Guide to Building Information Modeling for Owners, Managers, Designers, Engineers and Contractors by Eastman et al. covers all aspects of BIM, from theory to practice, for all stakeholders, including a look at the future together with a selection of case studies to illustrate the work and identify good practices. With regard to the concert hall, Gehry found himself beset with cost overruns so that the project was shelved for a long period due to lack of funding. It finally cost an estimated $274 million, which is more than five times the $50 million budget at the start of the project. Eastman pointed to two enabling technologies, parametric modelling and building data models, in University and Industry Research in Support of BIM.
