ABSTRACT

Business Information Modelling (BIM) is a collaboratively generated and maintained, data rich information source for the life of the design process. Longer-term benefits include better continuity of workload and a more reliable flow of design information. The proper use of soft landings, when applied to projects, means that operational outcomes are understood so as to better match design intentions, which are defined in the strategic brief. Another important aspect is the introduction of soft landings, to an extent the new RIBA work stages, 'Strategic Definition' and 'In Use', which go beyond the mere procurement and make for a longer engagement for all stakeholders. The core objective of the 'Strategic Brief' phase is to identify the client's business case, so that sustainable decisions are made. The core objective of the 'In Use' phase is to undertake in-use services so that the facility is used how it is intended to be used and so that EBD can begin to have an impact.
