ABSTRACT

In general, the stories were told in the evening after supper. Family and visitors alike often relaxed around the kitchen fire. Usually, some local happening reminded someone of a story which, in turn, led to another and another and another. It is hard to generalise about how such story-telling sessions came to an end. The fire burnt low; people grew weary or someone told a story which seemed to allow no comeback. Only once did I see a story-telling session terminated abruptly and that was when one of the male listeners, somewhat under the influence of mimbo, refused to 'suspend his disbelief' (see Tale 21) .
