ABSTRACT

An example to illustrate the difference between older and younger generations of black women can be taken from Elaine Richardson's study of young black women's reaction to Nelly and the St. Lunatics' song and video "Tip Drill". "Tip Drill" the video and "Tip Drill" the song are two very different entities that can function independently of one another. If people analyze the response in light of the way that young black women attempt to assert their agency in a society determined to undermine their attempt, they might yield some interesting results they might also better understand what author will call the messy middle between traditional black feminists and young black women. A step in the direct of creating a new gender politic that expands the concept of agency as it relates to black women's lives is via a discussion of Gadamerian hermeneutics.
