ABSTRACT

International Parallels: See No. 134. In this version of the tale, when the man who has stowed away in a puncheon on a ship

leaving Ireland is discovered, the puncheon with him in it is thrown overboard with the same callousness as in No. 134. The puncheon drifts ashore and this time it is a fox which rescues the man, though the explanation of how the Mahneys came to Freshwater is as amusingly improbable as the apparent rescue itself.
