ABSTRACT

International Parallels: This ribald jest has been reported only rarely in the available literature. Hoffmann, Survey, classifies the tale under Motif X725.1.1., and our Newfoundland recension closely resembles the summary he gives. The only English parallel we have found is in Randolph, Snow, pp. 58-59, no. 37 (Arkansas). We assume that Hoffmann's reference to an unpublished Ozark text in a Randolph manuscript (I, 106) is the tale later published in Randolph, Snow, referred to above. A fifteenth-century French tale, which closely resembles our story, is translated in Robbins, The Hundred Tales, pp. 30-31, no. 7. However, this lacks the punch line found in the Newfoundland and Arkansas versions. For a reference to the French text above, and also to an Italian version, see Rotunda, Motiflndex, K1325.1.*
