ABSTRACT

The units in this section provide an over view of the main areas asso ci ated with the know­ ledge of science needed to teach the subject in schools. These units do not try to provide an altern at ive to the detailed subject know ledge that can be obtained from good text books or subject know ledge enhance ment courses at differ ing levels but rather give some thing of an orient a tion towards the main areas in science, to encour age you to think about some of the ideas and issues with teach ing these subject areas and to provide further reading. Therefore, this section includes units on: the Nature of Science (3.1); Biology (3.2); Chemistry (3.3); Physics and Astronomy (3.4); and Earth and Atmospheric Science (3.5).
