ABSTRACT

بارعلإا means nothing less than speaking Arabic properly. But does it mean that we didn't speak Arabic properly before? Yes and no. Remember the issue of diglossia, the existence of two vernaculars in one language, which Arabic is known for, the age-old struggle between MSA and the various dialects. Also bear in mind that MSA is not a spoken language per se; every Arab speaks in his or her local dialect. But when talking to speakers of other dialects and on formal occasions Arabs (and non-native speakers) use MSA.
