ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the language of learning and seeks to answer the question: How to support the development of the appropriate vocabulary so that pupils are empowered. The chapter explores what is meant by the language of learning, identifies some key vocabulary necessary for the articulation of learning and discusses how this can be introduced and embedded into classroom life. The different phases of introducing and developing the language of learning in the classroom they are phase 1 is heighten awareness, phase 2 is immersion in the language, phase 3 is the metacognitive language cycle, phase 4 is reflection. The chapter deals with the case study that shows how a learning conversation with a child or group can encourage them to articulate their thinking and help tease out the learning processes taking place. Case study 1 is naming a process, case study 2 is creating photo-cues and case study 3 is counting in a foreign language.
