ABSTRACT

Organizational culture is the most important factor to consider in newsroom transformation. This chapter guides you on how to diagnose the different elements of your own culture and identify the underlying assumptions about how work should be done that may be blocking even the best-intentioned change efforts. This chapter also reviews the connection of leadership to culture and shows how processes, decisions, and rewards systems can influence cultural development in lasting ways. Applying management scholar Edgar Schein’s model to news organizations, it looks at the importance of factors such as the physical design of the newsroom, communication flows, and the gap between what is said and how people behave.
