ABSTRACT

In recent years, the study of OMB has emerged as an important field of inquiry within OB. Hence, this chapter has two main goals: To propose a general integrative framework for the management of OMB and to draw managers' attention to the phenomenon, its social consequences, and steep financial costs. The intention to misbehave and the decision as to which form of misbehavior one will engage in is assumed to be influenced by two independent forces: An instrumental force reflecting beliefs about personal interests, and a normative force reflecting internalized organizational expectations. One important implication derived from the model is that OMB management is not a linear, but an iterative process. A word of caution: Interventions designed to prevent OMB may have an adverse impact on the level of OMB if not designed and implemented carefully and sensitively. Surveillance cameras (CCTV) may serve management as a control system to monitor their employees.
