ABSTRACT

A sociolinguistic orientation to listening research focuses on the listener's role, on the listener's objectives, and the interaction of interlocutors in a social situation (LoCastro, 2012). Questions that can be asked include: What kind of listening is occurring in this situation? Who is the primary listener? What is the listener doing? What are the listener's apparent goals and plans? How are the other participants influencing the listener? Are things proceeding smoothly from the listener's perspective? What is facilitating or obstructing the listener in achieving these goals?
